it will be basic af right now just to have a space to speak. we will build it in the future, but there is a time crunch to get the sub moderated as soon as possible to avoid the reddit admins taking the sub down because of it overwhelming amount of hateful and outrageous posts

Make sure to use the "ignore reports" function for anything you approve. You can use Mod Tools to auto-ignore anything you approve to save you a few clicks.
It's really annoying to action the same comment 47 times

On your alt leave the server
"On your orders. That will be easy."
27-Jan-22 07:07 PM
Until we get an established group of mods, any posts that hit that AutoMod condition should just be removed instead of filtered. Once we get enough mods to keep up on the mod queue, we can change them back to filtered.

Something to keep in mind: lots of people are going to have lots of opinions and want to talk about them. We are pivoting to focusing on the purpose of the subreddit. Remove meta discussion posts. It may be painful to see some of them calling us out over it, but trust that those posts will eventually slow and stop.
This is a dramatic situation, and redditors love that drama
Also, do not reply to direct messages. Direct people to send modmail.

Grit and being objective-oriented is very important. The subreddit is not about anger toward one or two random mods - that anger will not matter in a week or two. The subreddit is about a movement and what real people feel against a very real world.

IDK what folks preferred browsers are, but this extension is helpful
Especially because you can leave "modnotes" on users that are only visible to mods. e.g. "Likely troll"... then if someone sees a bad comment later and some other mod has noted they're a likely troll... :banhammer:
just as a long-term note, IDK if this helps much during current huge traffic surge

automod is catching a lot
we can probably filter some key words
"On your orders. That will be easy."
27-Jan-22 10:04 PM
We need to just straight delete certain keywords instead of them being filtered. It's just more stuff we have to go thru in mod queue
"Look At Me, I'm The Captain Now"
27-Jan-22 10:05 PM
we can switch filtered to removed
I have no qualms with this

I think a significant number of catches are false positives.
So I am against removal in the general case until we can fix the filter

Hello,
I would like to inquire why my post titled "From Online To Offline: The Case For WorkReforms Support For The DSA" was immediately locked and removed from the subreddit. To my knowledge it is directly related to the topic of addressing the issues of "Fair wages, unions, work/life balance, being treated with respect" in the workplace. It was a recommendation to be democratically considered by members of the subreddit for the mods to then consider.
I can not see why this post violated this rule or any other rule.]

Folks, I have received numerous invites for quotes, interviews and just plain explanation from multiple media sources ( media outlets, internet talk shows, podcasts and articles). Please do not in any way accept these kind of invitations should they come to you, please don't quotes to these media outlets, all information they need will be in the subreddit sidebar/info. This is very important and I intend to be strict on that.

It's been my experience that the more you push back on accusations, the more accusations come. It oxygenates the issue at hand. The people who show up and try to sow uncertainty by targeting a subreddit's all volunteer mod team may think that they are acting in good faith but would probably never be good contributors to the community. Seen this play out countless times. If you ignore it, it'll eventually cease - or at least be reduced to only a slight nuisance.

FWIW I think the best outcome of [LABOR]reform/Antiwork/WorkersStrikeBack/etc are that they spawn a million small local chapters and a few thousand thought leaders. My point being, there's a bit of a "not me, us" sort of thing here. We don't need to centralize control to ourselves, and I think doing so should be antithetical to our beliefs (I don't think it's even possible). This is different than a political campaign to me, where there is an end in sight and centralized leadership makes sense.
1
So when people ask "okay how do we know X sub's moderators aren't corrupted" the answer is simple to me: you don't. So go make another sub. Just don't stir drama here. I really don't see the problem. Frankly, we're all here for that same reason (we didn't trust Antiwork), and I think that's fair. Put another way, my hope is that someone like MLK wouldn't go "okay, don't like AOC's twitter page. Like mine instead and unlike hers!". Makes no sense.
"Look At Me, I'm The Captain Now"
28-Jan-22 02:11 PM
Strategically I think it is unwise to tell someone who's mad at us or skeptical about the mod team to create their own community
but yes to empowering individuals
1
"A Tough, Sturdy Animal"
28-Jan-22 02:12 PM
Oh, yes. I agree, we shouldn't egg people on to screw off and go elsewhere. I'm sorry if I came across that way. I more meant to say that if people do, that's not a problem to me. And even OK if there are occasional friendly crossposts.
(edited)
For example, right now [ANGRY SUBREDDITS] are quite hostile to us. It makes sense to not want cross-referencing with them.
Whereas I believe [FRIENDLY SUBREDDIT] is friendly to us, right? It makes sense to want cross-referencing with them.

So there are two discussions here: Who is on the top of the list, and absolute control of the subreddit if others go rogue (because Reddit's moderation system is broken), and who has the final say in the civil discussions we're having on discord.

Ordering also matters because if ["Look At Me, I'm The Captain Now"] for some reason disappeared or were permabanned, the next person in line would take his place.
Not taking sides, just pointing out facts so people can be informed.

leftist infighting and rogue shit has been a major issue with many subreddits trying to accomplish real world goals, and it is to be avoided at all costs.
i know words and pledges are essentially only that, but i am in this to make a real difference and let the movement continue on its beatiful path.
my life was forever altered by the positivity on r/saltedhash1625329382, and i wholeheartedly think that what is happening here in reddit is crucial to the workers movement.

Hey, so I was just talking to "Look At Me, I'm The Captain Now" about a post that was removed. The user asked why, and I looked at the post and it didn't seem offensive. It did involve politics, and I was told that we are not allowing any of that. I completely agree with concentrating on the whole workers rights thing, but I've had run-ins previously with people when I said something about keeping politics out of things, and they claim that this is impossible or incompatible with the movement because it is a leftist movement and if we do not allow discussion of "politics" (for some definition of politics) we are somehow capitulating to the right. What's our response to that?

" Also, I understand we want the subreddit to be focused, but I think it's important to leave space for controversial discussions so long as they remain productive. They keep people coming back for critical thought and stir the melting pot. I think that's good.
I think we can think of them like fuel to nuclear reactors - we just need to control how much we let in so things don't violently explode. But we also don't want nothing." i posted in #🏏moderation earlier is my opinion.

To me, the post is a start to that, and an opportunity for the community to chime in before we go further on our own.

What do you think this community could do best to improve working conditions in our IRL communities?
"A Tough, Sturdy Animal"
28-Jan-22 03:39 PM
Which moves people to align and further flesh out what we've written. I suspect the community will largely agree with it from everything I've seen, which gives us ammo and acknowledgement to codify what are now their desires into rules.
"Not Us, Me"
28-Jan-22 03:39 PM
This sentence should be moved to the end.
Re rules, it takes time to do stuff and to do stuff right. This post will help begin to set the gestalt of the subreddit. Rules can come later in time, imo
Yeah, that sentence is already in there, i can just move to the end

Do we want the subreddit to focus on American workers or more global workers?
"Come with me if you want to live"
28-Jan-22 10:23 PM
well, id say the issues are more dire here and in need to sooner reform, but of course we wish for better workers right across the globe
i wish to inspire other large nations to start their own movements, and will support them publicly without doubt. i think we can do both, but if our finite resources must be placed somewhere, i think it should be here first. toughts?
i wouldnt go as far to work against efforts in other places. ever. all [LABOR] reform is good,

I think to me the answer is what's best for the community. I think international voices tend to smooth out conversations and provide perspectives to Americans, so we should explicitly welcome that. At the same time focus is important. It's highly irrelevant to Americans if we have Italian candidates being pushed for for example. Maybe those belong in WorkReformItaly for example

we have a post at the top of /new that likely has escape velocity to r/all
For context: if we let something hang at the top of /new for a bit, it tends to gain more traction. We do this regularly for things like AMAs and other important posts.

@everyone We are rolling out a revised rule list.
1. Play to win - all submissions must advance improvements to worker quality of life
2. Be respectful
3. No drama
4. No unauthorized self-promotion
5. Reddit’s global rules
6. No conspiracies or misinformation
7. Memes must be high quality
8. Partisan political posts are subject to greater moderator scrutiny
I'm sure you know how to enforce most of these rules. For clarity:
Rule 1: Play to win. Approve content that advances improvements in worker quality of life. Remove anything that doesn't.
Rule 8: Partisan political posts. Mods, use your best discretion here. Politics is on topic, but be quick to remove hyper-partisan political posts. "I'm a [blank] and I think [blank]" isn't useful for building community at this time. It is only generating fighting in the community at this time. Of all our rules, this is the one I hope to eventually be able to remove, because I think that by and large these are good posts for a [LABOR]reform that is a little more calmed down than it is now.
Happy to take questions.

If we don't have anything explicitly about hate speech we're going to get slammed with "Can you state explicitly that you don't support transphobic statements? " questions. As it is, with the no "hate-speech" rule I've seen many people "demanding" we have an explicit rule against certain flavors of hate speech.
I've tried the "because: duh" explanation that no reasonable person would think it's acceptable, and "no hate speech" covers it all, but that has never satisfied anyone. I would love it if we didn't need it, blocked all the assholes, and people became comfortable with that, and I hope it happens, but I just wanted to put this out there for consideration.

Also, there's nothing in there about reposts.

Hate speech can be rolled into a single category of bigotry. Most subs do it that way.
I've also been on subs that literally paraphrase the Geneva Conventions
It's much easier to stay simple and say moderators are the final arbiters of what qualifies as hate speech/disrespect. If questions come up, remove or ignore

FWIW Antiwork rules might be worth compare/contrasting:
1. No discriminatory language or actions towards others. This includes racism, sexism, transphobia, ageism, ableism. No flaming other users (insulting, name-calling, using discriminatory language).
2. No trolling. Trolling means posting inflammatory content/posts in an attempt to sow unnecessary discord in the subreddit.
3. No spam, no low-effort shitposts, no off-topic content. This includes posts begging for upvotes. Please do not post unrelated blog spam or try to sell anything for personal gain. If you've posted content (especially if it's your own), give it a few days before posting again.
4. No alt-right/fascist, authoritarian, totalitarian or incel content. Do not post/crosspost content that supports alt-right, fascist, authoritarian, totalitarian, or incel ideology
5. No calls for violence, no fetishizing violence. Do not post content that encourages, glorifies, incites, or calls for violence or physical harm against an individual or a group of people.
6. Reposts. Any content previously posted within the last 30 days will be removed. Same goes for reposts from the subreddit's all-time top 30.
7. No politicians, no CEOs. Do not post/crosspost content that supports (former or future) political candidates and their campaigns in any way. Take it to r/saltedhash2792561228. The same goes for the posting and promotion of CEOs. We don't need bosses and managers to speak for us.
8. No sharing of personal information as it violates the Reddit ToS.
9. No text-message screenshots Text-message screenshots are currently restricted to Sunday only. Please do not post them on any other day of the week.
10. No calling-out other users or subreddits Do not leave reddit usernames visible in screenshots or links. Do not post content with the purpose of antagonizing other subreddits.

As far as Rule 1 goes, everything that gets approved must advance the goals of [LABOR]reform. If a post doesn't do that, don't approve it. This is just the articulation of what we've been doing.
1
So obviously a post that's like "If we raise the minimum wage, that's gonna be bad " isn't what we want.

Personally I don't think the subreddit should be like [BERNIE_SUB]/[PROGRESSIVE_SUB] where it takes and pushes a stance from moderators. It should be a place for community conversations to happen and these seem like natural conversations people need to have to develop their political views.
"Look At Me, I'm The Captain Now"

I am comfortable with taking a step back from the rigidness of my interpretation of rule #1. Use your discretion, but we should be open to learnings. If it seems to work, let's re-evaluate rule 1. If it's leading to a ton of flame wars, let's tighten how we enforce it.
2
Be extra cautious right now, as the community is still riled up by the events of the past few days. That's all I ask.
And obviously, ax outright trolls.

That is what this is. "Not Us, Me" and I aren't here to manage discussion boards, but advance a particular agenda. Everything on [LABOR]reform will be framed through the lens of winning workers better working conditions, better wages - everything we've articulated so far. But the modteam has a vision and it will work with the community to make it real.

I suspect if a worker movement takes off in the US, a HUGE portion of that would happen through deprogramming of widely-held beliefs that are foundational to who people are. That's going to happen through discussion. This isn't like politics. In politics the goal AFAIK tends not to be "convert others" but instead "get your side to vote, so the other side has more people sitting on the side and you win".

One of our core touchpoints running [BERNIE_SUB] for the 2020 primary was: "Every voter is one conversation away from supporting Bernie Sanders." Tacking on: Bernie going from 2% to 45% in 2016 wasn't just a voter turnout game. Lots of persuasion happened.
(edited)
So I think this is like politics in a big way. To divorce it from that wouldn't be great. But I agree that room for discussion should be made, as long as the discussion is framed around advancing [LABOR] reform
Just err on the side of caution while things are still hot.

Imo focusing on labels detracts and skirts around the main topic at hand, especially since labels do not encompass the entirety of a person. They can be limiting, and dangerously generalizing when each person will hold different views and definitions from one another.
It's much better to talk about our journeys and experiences instead of absolute phrases, it tells more about who a person actually is as a person without giving off the wrong impressions; labels are not always accurate in conveying our intent, but talking more about our experiences will lead to shared experiences that unify us under the common causes we're fighting for.

Yeah, that is a huge contributor to rule 8 being written that way. But I would love to get to a position where we can talk about who we are and why that relates to our experiences without it causing a whole big thing
1
On [BERNIE_SUB]/[PROGRESSIVE_SUB], we have conservatives roll in occasionally to say they're voting for a progressive even though they're conservative. It's awesome. Community loves it. Also this is just a first iteration of our rules. "Not Us, Me" and I developed this specific list because it has done a great job of creating order elsewhere, and order is what Reddit admins have demanded. Some of these rules may be discarded or rewritten based on how we see the need to apply them to the community.

Given their history I assume they're referring to some on-campus conservative club of sorts, or some multi-campus conservative society. In any case while I personally want everyone joining the sub. I'm unsure how we should be using flairs. They're requesting a Libertarian flair. On one hand, PCM uses them without great toxicity. On the other hand, I don't think focusing on political identity should matter for our sub.

I'm just concerned it's going to fizzle out some of the momentum, and people may throw around more accusations of nontransparent censorship, like r/saltedhash1625329382.

For what it's worth, our audience is mainly north america to my knowledge. It's not the end of the world if we have silence at night time. I agree with all your concerns though and think transparency is the bigger issue. That plus we haven't recruited new mods from the community yet.
So for that reason, the risk of opening the floodgates or not seems minor to me. I get where you're coming from.

Fair points, we've got to add reasons very soon too for all the automod ones.
Okay, I guess we can decide tomorrow with everyone then.

I was approving/disappropving til like 3am last night. Not doing that again tonight. But 90% of the posts were approves and the few disapproves would be quickly downvoted.
OK sounds good, we can wait til tomorrow.

I'm hoping by the end of next week we have a lot more of the subreddit automated to move away from these tedious tasks, to focus more on content and community involvement.
At least for me, I'm looking into a way to run a scrip on my account to approve or remove reports as they come in. Maybe I'll find a way for the mod queue stream too

I think this is stuff we can pretty trivially put to community vote. Though actually I'm not convinced now that we've tried it for a day that it's actually getting us more subs.
Also if we want to be able to write human-tailored messaged per thread under the name of a bot (so it doesn't come across as karma farming) that's trivial for me to automate.
(edited)
Finally, make sure if you do pin a comment that you lock it. Otherwise it does look like you're just trying to farm replies and attention imo, even though I know that's not the case for anyone here.

I'm thinking we won't do community votes for basic moderator actions like this. We'll look at learnings and adjust course as needed

People are going to criticize literally everything we do. It is impossible to please everyone. Community will adjust and keep growing, so long as we're acting in good faith generally, which we are.

@everyone - I want to call this out real quick.
https://old.rexxit.cxm/r/W.rk.R.frm/comments/[REDACTED - MOD TRANSPARENCY POST]/
I appreciate the care that went into this post and I know the intentions are good, but we do not make modposts without team discussion and input. It does not matter if you claim to only be speaking for yourself - when you make a post as a moderator, flair it as a mod post, and discuss moderation efforts, you are speaking for all of us.
This kind of thing requires collaboration, especially the input of ["Not Us, Me"] or myself, preferably both of us. Don't take it upon yourself to interface with the community about how we're strategizing internally. Thanks.

They are. People like being shepherded into things that make them feel empowered. Once we get that "How to form a union" guide together, im pretty stoked to see what happens
One goal I have with this subreddit is to send stuff like "concrete guide to unionizing" to front page of reddit on the reg
throwing that in front of millions of eyeballs on a semi-daily basis is going to be some pretty high quality reddit activism
We drove a lot of IRL activism on [BERNIE_SUB], too, bu funneling folks to call teams and stuff in their geographic area
Stuff that "emerges" from this, especially with prodding from modding driving them to a handful of specific thing -- the community is going to wind up doing some freaking cool stuff, i am pretty confident
In philosophy, systems theory, science, and art, emergence occurs when an entity is observed to have properties its parts do not have on their own, properties or behaviors which emerge only when the parts interact in a wider whole.
Emergence plays a central role in theories of integrative levels and of complex systems. For instance, the phenomen...

its not you [REDACTED], perms were pulled temporarily to make sure it stay up until ["Look At Me, I'm The Captain Now"] rolls out of bed and makes his decision. [GAMMA] tried to talk to him and was blocked
he has changed every single idea we stood for as a sub the second he had power.
put fear into the minds of other mods
intimidated people through dms
powermods gonna powermod.
transparancy is key, and theres no taking it back now.
frankly, i cant believe he did this shit. it disgusts me. i am a huge bernie supporter, and thought that he would share ideals.
the caliber of human being displayed is some of most dishonest, distasteful, unaltruistic, internet power driven mania i have ever witnessed.
none of the other original mods were consulted about the transfer of power.
he whispered in [GAMMA]s ear knowing he did not fully understand the levity of the situation. he fucking kicked the god damn original mods...
what the fuck did he think was going to happen?
